HH#33 On Meeting Your Heroes

I still think it’s a good idea…

Mr. DeMille

It’s not that they won’t live up to your expectations. It’s that the moment won't be as special for them as it is for you. But how often do they meet a fan like me? You get their work on a deeper level.

I got my special moment with Mr. Nelson DeMille last week at his book signing at Long Island U. Just not in the way I imagined. During his fireside chat with rep. Steve Israel (New York’s 3rd congressional district, aka The Gold Coast) moderators passed out notecards to the audience for questions that would get handed back up.

“This one’s interesting,” Steve said. “A craft question.”

I sat up in my chair. He was going to ask mine.

“In THE MAZE you never write John Corey’s visceral reactions (e.g. ‘his heart pounded’)…meanwhile there are textbooks for aspiring writers on how to write these bodily reactions. How did you figure out this wasn’t necessary? (Thank you for the masterclass).”

You guys know me by now that only I could come up with something so Virgonian.

Mr. DeMille gazed out at the crowd.

“Who asked that?”

I raised my hand from way in the back as the whole room turned. Mr. DeMille looked at me and pressed his lips.

“I honestly don’t know,” he said. “I’ve never been asked that before and I’ve never thought about it. But now I will.”

I forgot to bring this up when it was my turn to get my book signed. You have to remember, I’ve studied Mr. DeMille’s writing in excruciating detail. I took my favorite book of his (his 600+ page tome, THE GOLD COAST aka NY's 3rd Congressional) and outlined every chapter into a massive spreadsheet (which by the way taught me nothing except that it was a work of literature and diverged greatly from the structure of commercial genre fiction. Still my favorite book).

Storygridding the Gold Coast

He started giving me the generic, “I hope you like it, etc.” about THE MAZE (which I'd already finished). Not that he wasn’t being super generous with his time but I needed to start pulling out the stops.

I showed him the first edition I had in my pocket of the first book he ever wrote which I was carrying around, an out of print pulp paper back, which I’m pretty sure he wasn’t too happy to see in the wild. I got it for study purposes. I had to see what his first book read like. (I think my first book is going to be better than his first book.)

“A collector’s item.” He turned it over in his hands. “Unfortunately it’s not very good. How much did this cost?”

"Thirty five dollars, plus shipping."

Before leaving I asked him if he wouldn’t mind sprinkling some magic on my hands.

“Why? You want to write?”

“Yup.”

“Don’t do it,” he said, and kind of smiled, which I know for any real writer is code because if
you’re that easily deterred then it's probably good advice.

As time has passed since the event I’ve found myself getting more and more satisfied with having been able to hear his response on craft. He doesn’t overthink it. He just lets it rip. I like that.

My plan is to finish editing my manuscript so I can meet him again at a fancy author event, wearing a Good Baby tank and blazer with the padded elbows except next time sitting on the same side of the table .

Happy Friday. Your pal,

Charlie
